How To: Modify & Fit PH1 Gsi Side Skirts On To A 5dr Astra
Jordan_turbo;484930 schreef:right then.

as ive been asked by quite a few pwoplw now how i did my side skirts i thoight id do a bit of a "how to"

so for all the other guys and girls on the stie who like me cant aford to splash out on expencive 200ts stuff here goes.

i apologise for tha lack of pics at some stages, hadnt planed to do a how to when i did it so only realy took before and after pics. if anyone uses this guide to do a set can they take some pics and send them to me so i can add them for other people.

step one
get yourself some normal PH1 GSi skirts

step to
hold the skirts and door mouldings up to the car and mark where the door edges are. make the marks slightly smaller than the doors them selfs as its easier to make it back up with filler than to have to cut the skirts again because they stick out past the doors once fitted (if that makes sence )

step three (no turning back ;))
cut along the lines youve just marked so that you end up with 5 pieces (like below) front and rear skirt pieces, one moulding for the front door and two bits of door moulding for the rear door.

step four (could do with some more pics but but oh well)
you now have to stick the rear door moulding pieces together the easiest way is to lay them both outside facing down somwhere flat and join them with fibreglass on the back and then when its set fill the gap on the outside between the two bits to make it smooth. ignore the fact that they are painted. i had to paint them again anyway once they were fitted

if you dont know how to use fibre glass have a look at this thread.

step 5 (could also do with some pics)
the bits of skirt you have now will have sides "missing" (the top edge of the rear section of the skirts and the bottom/rear edges of the rear door moulding) you need to build these up with fibreglass and filler. there is two ways you can do this; off the car or after their fitted.
i think its easier to fit them and then make up the other sides until they meet the body of the car otherwise its a never ending story of trial and eror getting them to fit right ;)

step 6
fit the skirts to the car. what you use is up to you, most people use tigerseal or such like or you can pop rivet the normal gsi brackets onto your car.
personly i just nicked some heavy duty stuff from work called "gorilla snot", uset that on the top edge of the main skirts and the door mouldings and then riveted along the underside of the skirts. i also ran a line of filler along the top of the roor mouldings just to stop water going down the back and rotting the doors ;)

step 7
now to build up those missing edges. i found the easiest way was to get some wire mesh and stick it to the top edge of the skirts.then once the skirts are fitted bend the mesh over the gap and use it as a bace to lay your fibreglass on. once the fibre glass has set you can then put filler over the top and sand smooth.

you can build up the door mouldings in the same way.

step 8
paint the lot. dont mask off the skirts when you paint them as you end up with a line when you remove the masking tape. also for a how to on painting parts have a look at my grill thread again. (http://www.mk3oc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30910)

Jij hobbyist!

When J. Robert Oppenheimer said "I have become death, the destroyer of worlds", he wasn't referring to the atomic bomb. He was referring to the Chuck Norris Halloween costume he was wearing.
